
Michael Toomey
ORNL R&D Associate
Michael Toomey is a research and development associate in the Carbon and Composites Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Chemical Sciences Division. He is also a University of Tennessee–Oak Ridge Innovation Institute Fellow, working with the institute’s Clean Manufacturing and Advanced Materials Convergent Research Initiative.
Toomey’s research focuses on the development of high-performance composites with an emphasis on sustainable, low-carbon solutions. His work spans the design of phase change materials for thermal energy storage, advanced architected polymers for additive manufacturing, and composites that utilize biogenic and waste feedstocks for recyclable applications. His contributions to materials circularity and energy-efficient solutions directly align with global sustainability initiatives, helping to push the boundaries of materials engineering for a sustainable future.
