Preparing our Next Generation of STEM Leaders

The University of Tennessee-Oak Ridge Innovation Institute (UT-ORII) is preparing engineers, scientists and other STEM talent for a global economy that demands interdisciplinary problem-solving, rapid innovation and real-world application.

UT-ORII is committed to providing world-class STEM opportunities for students at each step of their educational pathway — from the nation’s only joint university-national laboratory doctoral programs and SMaRT undergraduate internships, to our exciting, new, hands-on K-12 STEM program.

The University of Tennessee-Oak Ridge Innovation Institute (UT-ORII) welcomes the nation’s best and brightest undergraduates each summer for the Student Mentoring and Research Training (SMaRT) summer internship program.

SMaRT interns have the unique opportunity of working alongside researchers from UT and Oak Ridge National Laboratory for 10 weeks over the summer. Interns receive a stipend, housing and an allowance for travel to and from Knoxville, Tennessee.

Encouraging an interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) is important regardless of your child’s age, but it’s particularly crucial during middle and high school when students begin considering career options.
