Congratulations to Toby Nelson, research associate professor with UT-ORII’s Circular Bioeconomy Systems Convergent Research Initiative, on receiving the Sloan Scholar Network’s Outstanding Mentor award.
Throughout Nelson’s career, he has mentored more than 100 individuals, ranging from middle school students to assistant and associate professors, cultivating a culture of excellence, integrity, and service at every level.
“As a first-generation college student, I learned that success is rarely achieved alone,” said Nelson. “Throughout my career, I have benefited from mentors who challenged me, believed in my potential, and helped me see opportunities I might have otherwise missed. I view mentoring as both a responsibility and an opportunity to help students develop not only as scientists and engineers, but as confident, ethical, and resilient individuals.”
Nelson is currently advising three Bredesen Center doctoral students, working with them on projects developing efficient and innovative strategies for the mechanochemical processing of advanced materials, including high-performance polymers.
The Outstanding Mentor award recognizes a Sloan Scholar alum with a record of mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students, demonstrating how their mentoring style and history have supported students from diverse backgrounds.
